got gung-ho about sneaker culture in the early 2000's, I found a small niche sub-culture of sneaker customizers. They were making one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork that used Nike (mainly) sneakers as the canvas. I was inspired to do a pair of my own, and soon that ambition spawned a few more pairs. 2 were personal, and 3 were contracted for clients. The shoe would usually start out all white or all black. They were prepared and scrubbed down with acetone to remove the original factory layer of paint before applying the new coats. The paint applied was a special leather acrylic that bonded nicely to the material because it was ultimately more flexible than a regular acrylic brand. http://www.partkl.com/GiraffeSoft
